Clinical Studies on Intussusception



Abstract
A clinical study was made on a series of 41 cases of intussusception. during April, 1959 to the end of May, 1967.
The results obtained are as follows:
1) In this series. intussusception in the childhood period, below the age of 14, occurred in 33 cases and adult, over the age 15, 8 cases.
2) Age distribution of intusscsception in infant and childhood group was highlly concentrated on the age of 8-10 th months and average age was 8 months. Contrary to this, there was no any specific age period in the adult intussusception cases.
3) In the infants and children group of intussusception, there was preponderance in male comparing to female. 2. 4 to 1 was the male and female sex ratio. But in the adult group, no significant sex difference.
4) Etiological lesions were found in 6 cases of infants and children group (18%). But no one was iound in adult group which were considered to be some different to western reports.
5) Cardinal symptoms and signs were abdominal pain, and tenderness in 70.7% of cases, nausea and vomiting in 67.3%, Current-jelly stool in 87.8 abdominal mass 46.3% and so on.
6) Anatomical types of intussuseeption were enterocolic type in 80.4% of the total cases, (ileo-cecal type, 34.1%, ileocolic type 46.3% and ileoileocolic 2.4), cole-colic type in 9.8% and ileoileal type in 7.4%.
7) Barium Enema was quite useful and benificial diagnostic method as well as therapeutic way in the early case of intussusception.
8) Non-operative reduction was possible in 7 cases of intussusception without mortality. And of operative intervention were carried out in 34 cases in which 16 cases were treated by manual reduction, and intestinal resection with primary end to end anastomosis on 18 cases.
9) There were 8 death in operative intervention group, due to prostration and exhaustion in 4 cases, fluid and electrolytes imbalance in 2 cases, peritonitis due to suture insufficiency in 1 case and unkwon cause in 1 case.
